Summer in the Northern Hemisphere officially arrives on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 6:52am EDT (3:52am PDT) which is called the Solstice. The Summer Solstice sets the stage for what is on the horizon over the next three month. On the Summer Solstice we experience the most sunlight, often being called the longest day of the year.
The Solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years. People create rituals, celebrations, and festivals around the world to celebrate the Solstice. It is a period of growth and fertility. In cold climates, summer is a time of producing food in preparation for the winter.
You don’t have to have a garden to reap the benefits of this time. Personal growth and nurturing is a common theme for this Solstice. It is influenced by the regal sign of Leo – who encourages us to have fun, be childlike, playful, generous and magnanimous. Sounds like the perfect recipe for flip-flops, swimsuits, sunglasses, and barbeques with family and friends.
Leo also has a flare for the dramatic, self-centered, and power struggles. Shift any of these behaviors towards love and playfulness and you’ll bring yourself back into balance.
Money and self worth are also highlighted this summer. It’s important to look at what is authentic to you, what you value, and look at what you need to do to stand in your personal power. With Leo’s playful and creative spirit you may see new ways of expressing yourself, looking into new ways of earning money, or work on your self esteem to boost your confidence. Whatever you do, be light hearted, patient, and have fun!
Honor yourself and the Solstice by creating some sort of ritual around this event. It was always my favorite time to throw a Goddess party. It has been a couple of years since I’ve done this, but what better way to celebrate then with good friends and food. In 2015 the Goddess parties will resume. Next year we are holding a Solstice Retreat in Costa Rica – and you’re ALL invited! Whatever you do to celebrate the Summer Solstice, honor yourself, your growth, the sun, and have a Sizzling Fun Summer!
